Pather Panchali

Pather Panchali

Pather Panchali, The directorial debut of Satyajit Ray. The movie is all an emotional roller-coaster ride. Its just like you are flowing against a river of emotions. You never know what's ahead. The movie is a matter of pride for every Indian. This movie is a major landmark of Indian and World Cinema.

Talking about characters. Characters were defined with such depth and scope. Each character has its own uniqueness. The old aunt and Apu were outstanding. The old aunt played by Chunibala Devi acted out very well. Every actor just brings out the realism in the story. I think watching Apu and Durga brought out immense joy in me. Durga stealing Guava and the happiness in old aunt when Durga gifts it to her.

The role of music in this movie. Movie is not about visual treat by Ray but a collection of melodious tunes by Pandit Ravishankar. Every frame in the movie is backed up by a background score suiting the ambiance and mood at that instant. I guess the score added to the beauty of the movie. For instance the scene where Durga and Apu are drenched in rain. The music played a great role in giving the warmth to the visuals.

Apart from story and music, Ray's visuals attracted me mainly. A perfect visual treat. The cinematography is stunning and apt to the theme of the movie. It never failed the ambiance or feel of the movie, Lyrical maybe. I loved the scene where a cat cuddles by a dog. Likewise, old aunt showing the hole in her blanket. Apu finding the necklace Durga stole. Perfect.

As Akira Kurosawa said of him:"To have not seen the films of Ray is to have lived in the world without ever having seen the moon and the sun"

Onam!!!

Posted by Deepak Hariharan

Onam is a festival of joy and colours. It falls during the month of Chingam(Malayalam Calendar). It approximately falls during August or September. The festival marks the homecoming of King Mahabali who was sent down to patalam(hell) by Lord Vamana. The King was a favorite among praja(people) as it is believed that there was nothing evil during his reign-no crime no thieves no lies! The festival is celebrated during 10 days. The main celebration is placing earthern mounds are placed infront of the house and decorated with flowers of various colour and shape and is called athapookalam. Various competitions are also conducted judging the beauty among different decoration. The myth behind celebrating with flowers is that Mahabali was allowed to visit his people by Vamana before he was sent to patala. The thiruvonam day is considered to be that auspicious day when Mahabali comes to earth to meet his people. Hence everybody irrespective of caste, religion or whatever decorates their house and cleans up their house. The best part in Onam celebration is Onasadhya(Onam Feast). It is like around 11 dishes. It is onne helluva feast and I love it madly. There are other celebrations or onakallikal(Onam Games) too like snake boat race, then kaikotti kalli(a dance form) blah blah! Apart from all these everyone gets new dress. As I said, its like everyone celebrates ie. be happy so that Mahabali becomes happy seeing us all happy!

The Myth behind Mahabali being sent to patala:Mahabali's reign was so good, as I said earlier, no crime no lies etc. Everyone was so happy then but during some yaga Mahabali declared that he will give anything that anyone sought from him. Vamana took advantage of the situation and made a simple request to give him the land he measures by his feet steps. Mahabali agrees to this. Vamana soon grew large and with his first step he covered all of earth and with his second step all of heaven. Vamana had no place left to cover and Mahabali asks to consider his head as third step. Hence Vamana sends Mahabali down to patala. However Mahabali was granted his wish to see his people once every year.

Onam festival is very important to every South Indian especially Malayalees. Most of them have grown up celebrating Onam very year. So the festival brings some nostalgia in people. All the fun they had in collecting flowers for the pookalam, all those onakallikal and onasadhya. It brings them a flash of all those good old days in their life. In the fast lane of life, people tend to forget their values and culture and (I personally feel) Onam helps a lot in reviving the true shape of the person. It reminds him the vivid culture in our artforms and lifestyle. Onam festival is never a religious festival though it mainly includes Hindu mythology. Irrespective of caste and religion everyone get together and celebrate it happily. It is said that "We must celebrate Onam with whatever we have-poor or rich"

Some Athapookalam Snaps

Goondas And Quotation Gangs!!

Posted by Deepak Hariharan

Kerala is now the den of goondas and quotation gangs. Goondas(or goons) are thugs hired to physically torture a person. It can even go up to assasination of the target. Quotation remarks the same in a different aspect, but in a way they are feathers of the same bird. After the recent murder of Paul Muthoot who was the head Muthoot M George Group was murdered and it still is a mystery. Kerala Police has confirmed the influence of goondas in the crime. But the mystery is the goondas are closely related to top politicians in the state. Police has not been able to come with proper plot behind the crime. They seem to protect the someone occupying high profile in the society. Different stories are coming up in the press every day and the truth GOD only knows. Goondas and Quotation Gangs is ruling every district in the state. Even the Police department as well as many politicians avail their "service" and as a result owe them commitment not to turn them in. There is a funny part too. There are even female goondas. Frankly, I don't know if they are called female thugs itself because I have never heard of such a thing prevailing in India. I read in local daily newspaper, under the goonda act many females have been caught in various places in the state. Goondas have "various levels of action". They can just blackmail you or even take away your life. They will do anything for money, interesting right? They are not biased too. They don't bother if it is a small kid or very old man. The goons play a major role in most of the crimes across the state. They have the political influence and aid from the police. So they practically are Goondas, The Almighty!Interesting fact about most of these goons are they don't have cut muscles and all ie. most of them are skinny. But the influence and power they possess that matters. They will do anything for money and they already have get-out-of-jail-free card.

Watching Movie On Release Day!!

Posted by Deepak Hariharan

Yay! I got to watch another movie on its release day. Trust me, its frigging awesome. It really is awesome to watch the movie after all the hustle and bustle for the tickets. The crowd in front of the theatre and the long wait in the ticket counter for tickets.! I had been waiting for the release of movie Kandasaamy for around 2 years. I had planned of watching it on release day. The movie was supposed to release in May 2009. But the release dates were postponed everytime. Though they released the movie at last on 21st August 2009! But i feel, it was not publicised properly. Anyways!

I, as said before, wanted to watch it on release day. But it clashes with my college time table since it is a working day. Obviously I prefered the movie to my friggin college(:D)! I attended my first hour and jumped out! I went to nearby town Kollam(like around 50 kms from here). The crowd in front of theater was so huge that we had no idea how we(me and my friends!) were going to get those damn tickets. But my friend's friend was there and we gave him the money for tickets and managed somehow. The black ticket mafia in theatres are so cool. They just come and stand in front of the queue. Nobody dare questions them!!Well, by the time ticket counter opened, all tickets were sold soon enough that our friend's friend too didn't get ticket. We were left with two option! One go back and the other get a black ticket(2nd hand tickets..!google it if you dont know the meaning of black ticket!) We bought tickets for 80 bucks from the guys selling black tickets. Movie started and it was like mediocre theater! Vikram(hero in the movie) rocks! The movie was super cool. Well, that is not the response I saw from my friends. Yet, I conclude movie is not that bad!

New Bike This Month!

Posted by Deepak Hariharan

Finally, my dad promised me a new bike guys! I will get to replace my old Kinetic Nova at last. I always had dreamed of a bike for myself, but never been able to get one. Fortunately (for me), Nova is needing repairs very often plus we got it by second hand from a nearby person. It was completely worn out in all ways, but we needed a vehicle since I had to go to college(lolz!) plus I cant get a bus to coll not that often! Well, he made the commitment very recently. He has promised that he will buy me a bike by the end of this month. I made it clear that I wanted Bajaj Pulsar, when he enquired about bike name, model and stuffs. I was always fascinated about Bajaj Pulsar. Let it be 150cc, 180cc or even 200cc. But I am going either for 180cc or 200cc (mostly 180cc - economic constraints guys!). Anyways I want to get the vehicle as soon as possible. Moreover I don't want dad to get me some other bike too. I want Pulsar 180 chrome black :( . He changes plan last minute and I am afraid he won't buy me Pulsar :( . Will upload pics and all after I get the bike. Buh Bye till then guys! Pray that I get Pulsar 180 :)

So he tries to get Navorski to leave but Navorski remains where he is. Navorski makes friends with some of the people who work in the airport and is attracted to a flight attendant he runs into whenever she comes in.

My Review:

The movie rocks simply. A helluva direction as well as screenplay! The movie doesn't drag or make you yawn. I guarantee. The movie is meek and simple. A brilliant movie by Tom Hanks and Spielberg. Hats off to Tom Hanks' acting. He really do fit deep in his role. Life is all about waiting! Thats the theme of the movie!

I will give 9/10 for this flick!

Kambakkht Ishq 2009

Posted by Deepak Hariharan

  • Produced By Sajid Nadiadwala
  • Directed By Sabbir Khan
  • Cast : Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Amrita Arora, Aftab Shivdasani....
Synopsis:
All about ego clash between Viraj Shergill (Akshay Kumar), a famous stunt man in "Hollywood", and Simritha Rai ( Kareena Kapoor), a model and surgeon. Well, the story is all about a watch being left behind by Simritha while operating Viraj and how she takes it back to save her career. But, obvious fact like any Hindi movie, at last Viraj and Simritha gets married forgetting all the ego clash and fights. The movie also casts Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh, Denise Richards in special appearance.

My Review:
This movie sucks. Please don't dare watch it. Since the attracting name, cool promos and Hollywood stars like Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh, Denise Richards I saw the movie with high expectation. The last 2 or 3 Akshay Kumar movies have been flops, and I feel Kambakkht Ishq can add to that list. Many goofed up, its-so-obvious scenes made the movie really sick and weird. I still wonder how Sylvester Stallone ended up saving Amrita and Kareena from those bullies. Miracles yaar.! I am not mentioning about their 6 or 7 kisses. A very bad script with a mediocre direction. 2 hours of boring comedy and coward stunts by Akshay Kumar made me feel really bad for him. Songs can't be worse more than this. Make some good movies dude.!

I will give 1/10 for this film
